Your daughter came home from school in tears a few weeks ago after being told she had got headlice. So like any good parent you quickly went down to the chemist and bought the best treatments that money could buy. And you thought that would be it. Wrong! The little critters are still with you. Now everyone in the house is scratching. To make things worse, you spoke to a friend of yours with kids who said she went through the whole chemist's shelf of products and nothing worked. Is it time to try out some of those good old-fashioned home remedies for headlice?
The problem with headlice has been getting worse over recent years on both sides of the Atlantic. One study in the UK showed that 80% of headlice were resistant to the chemicals commonly used in treatments. Another showed that it was 4 times more effective to use a fine comb that treating your hair with lice shampoo. This, together with concerns over side effects of drug treatments, has led many parents to look at using a home remedy for headlice. Commonly used home remedies that have been reported to be successful include the following: Soak the hair in antiseptic mouthwash and then place in a shower cap and leave for 2 hours. This should kill the critters. The eggs are attached to the hair with very strong glue. Applying white vinegar to the hair afterwards loosens this glue and allows the eggs to be brushed out. Another treatment that some people have found to be effective is the use of tea tree oil. This is a product that is available in various different presentations and under different brand names. You should be able to get it from a chemist or shop that sells aromatherapy oils. Different people have had success in adding it to their ordinary shampoo, or using a spray formula to spray on the hair.
Physical removal of the nits is an important addition to this home remedy for headlice. You can buy a special headlice comb for this. It has extremely fine teeth and can be effective in combing out adults, juveniles and eggs. This will also remove old eggs that lice have hatched out of. This is important to prevent you thinking that you have a new infestation when in fact it is just old egg cases. If all else fails, cutting the hair short may be an option for boys. Well, it's good enough for the Army.
